About

Steven Universe is an American animated children’s show broadcasted on Cartoon Network. It was created by Rebecca Sugar, Cartoon Network’s first female director.

Premise

The story centers around the Crystal Gems and their various adventures, while Steven gradually learns how to use his gem power so he can play his part in protecting the world alongside his friends properly[8].

History

Before Rebecca Sugar became the director of Steven Universe, she was a storyboard artist of the popular animated TV show Adventure Time. The show is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and premiered in North America on November 4, 2013[9]. The show is currently airing its 2nd season as of May, 2015.

Reception

Steven Universe gets an average score of 7.8 out of 10 from 2,016 users at IMDB[6], a solid 8.0 from TV.com[7], and a 4 out of 5 stars from Common Sense Media[5]. The show is heavily praised for its charming art style, memorable soundtrack, and well-written plot and characters. The show is also remarked for bearing characteristics that are pro-social justice such as having the majority of its cast as female characters of varying personalities and body types.

Online Relevance

The show and its developers are well known for having close connections with its fans’ online community. Keep Beach City Weird is a tumblr blog run by the staff of the show that is meant to be owned by Ronaldo, one of the minor characters in the show, and thus is a roleplay blog.[18] Various internet memes and subcultures have been referenced in Keep Beach City Weird such as otakus and furries. Steven Crewniverse is another tumblr blog run by the staff, but yields behind-the-scenes content such as storyboard images and soundtrack.[19]

The rising popularity of the show caught the attention of the creators of Equestria Daily, a famous fan-news site for the animated TV show My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. They have announced on March 13, 2015 that a fan-news site for Steven Universe made by them will be launching soon[10]. The news have brought about mixed reactions -- mostly negative -- from the different fandoms involved, thus prompting Equestria Daily writer Calpain to tweet about cancelling the Steven Universe fan-site.

However, on June 12, 2015, Calpain has announced that Beach City Bugle, the newly given title of the Steven Universe fan-site, has been launched, regardless of what he or those that oppose the fansite said in the past.[16]

Fandom

Steven Universe has a considerably large online following. As mentioned above, Beach City Bugle is a new and upcoming Steven Universe fan-site that showcases submitted fan-art and news regarding all things Steven Universe.[17] The official facebook page currently has roughly 1.1 million likes.[13] Deviant Art now has over 20,867 results tagged with the show’s title[1]. Fanfiction.net has over 581 works for Steven Universe[2]. The Steven Universe Reddit has over 1800 readers[3]. Steven Universe has a very active tag on Tumblr[4], sporting multiple blogs that have dedicated themselves to deviations of the show such as gifs and fan art. A Steven Universe Wiki exists and it currently has 675 pages in it[11]. The wiki is under heavy development and currently has a built-in timer that countdowns until the next episode airs.

Homeworld Gems

Gemsonas

Gemsonas is a term used to refer to the OCs (Original Characters) of the Steven Universe Fandom, although the term Gemsona has become popular in the fandom and has thus given Steven Universe OCs more depth and exclusivity. Gemsonas, much like the Gems in the show, are non-binary (neither male nor female, regardless of how much they appear to be one gender or the other,) represents a certain mineral, and carries their own unique weapon.

A blog dedicated to receiving and showcasing Gemsona fan-art exists and is currently active[12]. The blog Keep Beach City Weird, a tumblr blog run by the creators of Steven Universe, made another reference to Gemsonas in one of their posts. In this case, the ‘Hobosona’ is an original character for the in-universe fictional book, The No Home Boys.[15]

The term was used by the show itself in the episode Say Uncle, the fourth episode of the second season and the crossover episode where Steven Universe meets Uncle Grandpa, another upcoming show from Cartoon Network Studios.[14]

Sneople

Sneople, a portmanteau of the words “snake” and “people”, refers to a race of reptilian humanoids mentioned in an episode of the animated television series. In April 2015, the term was popularized on Tumblr along with other portmanteaus, including “snurch” (snake + church), sneeple (snail + people) and sneme (snail + meme).

Stronger Than You

Stronger Than You is a song written by Rebecca Sugar and sung by Garnet (Estelle). As the climax of the season finale, the song has inspired fans to create remixes, instrumentals, covers, and fan art based on it.

Uncomfortable Steven Face

Uncomfortable Steven Face is a reaction face featuring a still image of the protagonist Steven wearing an awkward, confused facial expression in an episode of the animated television series. As it is used in the show as a reaction after a bad pun, likewise is its usage online.

About

Regular Show is an American animated television series currently airing on Cartoon Network. Created by J.G. Quintel, the show premiered on September 6, 2010 and is currently on its fifth season. The series revolves around the lives of two friends, a blue jay named Mordecai and a raccoon named Rigby, both employed as groundskeepers at a park. The show’s other main characters include Benson, a gumball machine who works as the park’s manager; Skips, an immortal yeti who skips instead of walking; Pops, a lollipop-shaped man whose father owns the park; Muscle Man and High-Five Ghost, two best friends who also work as groundkeepers, and Thomas, a goat who is the new intern.

The show has received positive reviews from critics and has also performed well in ratings.[1] It has been nominated for numerous awards, and won an Emmy Award in 2012.

History

The ideas for Regular Show grew out of J.G. Quintel’s own life and experiences in college.[1] Several characters from Regular Show were developed from characters from two student films Quintel made at the California Institute of the Arts: The Naïve Man from Lolliland (2005, left) and 2 in the AM PM (2006, right).[1]

Quintel soon found work at Cartoon Network Studios, and was offered to pitch for the network’s project Cartoonstitute.[2] He developed the characters from his student films to create the original Regular Show pilot. The project was abruptly cancelled, but Regular Show was greenlit.

After gathering a team of storyboard artists, work started on the show’s first season. “The Power”, the show’s first episode, aired on September 6, 2010; it received positive reviews and attracted 2.097 million viewers.[3] The show has been noted for its own special humor and style, including its voice acting, references to 1980s culture, featured music and adult humor.[1] As the series progressed, it soon found its own special following. A wiki dedicated to the series exists,[4] and the show’s Facebook page has over 2 million likes as of December 2012.[5]

Online Presence

As a result of its popularity and following, the series has spawned an extensive collection of fan art illustrations.

An advice animal image macro series featuring Mordecai and Rigby’s heads superimposed on a pinwheel background has accumulated over 910 submissions as of October 2012.[6]

Overview

Shovel Fight Video refers to an amateur recording which shows a teenage girl striking another girl in the back of her head with a shovel during a physical brawl. As with previous “fight videos” that have gone viral on the Internet, the footage spawned a number of remix videos after it began circulating on Vine in early May 2014.

Background

On May 4th, 2014, Viner Josh Officer posted a video clip of a girl being hit in the head with a shovel as she retreats from another teenage girl’s porch (shown below). In the next 48 hours, the video garnered upwards of 510,000 tweets, 75,000 revines and 73,0000 likes.

On May 5th, 2014, YouTuber gumbo uploaded an extended version of the video, showing the girls engaging in a fist fight prior to the shovel being thrown (shown below). When one of the girl’s retreats to her home in order to retrieve a “BB gun,” she is pursued to her front porch by her rival. In retaliation, she grabs and shovel and hits her opponent in the head. Within 24 hours, the video gained over 1.05 million views before being removed from the site.

The same day, the video was reposted to Worldstar Hiphop,[2] where it received upwards of 2.3 million views and 8,200 comments in 24 hours. That day, the sports blog Larry Brown Sports[4] highlighted several notable tweets from her feed and included a link to her Facebook page. As of May 6th, her Twitter account has been suspended.

Death Hoax

That same day, the hashtag #RIPShovelFightGirl began circulating on Twitter, accompanied with a fake news story reporting that Lynn had died after the fight due to complications from head injuries sustained from the shovel blow.[11]

Miranda Fugate died of serious head injuries after being hit with a shovel in the head by an old friend of hers named Emily Powers. The whole thing was caught on video and posted all over the internet and generated around 500,000 video views in just 2 days. In the video, the two girls begin fist fighting outside Emily’s house for a few seconds before Emily threatened to go inside her house and bring out an air soft gun which shoots plastic BB’s, when Miranda suddenly charged at Emily, Emily grabbed a nearby shovel and “cracked” Miranda in the dome. If you haven’t seen the video, watch the video below: At first, It only seemed like a minor head injury as Miranda also temporarily lost one ear’s hearing. Suddenly, while watching ‘Mean Girls’ at home that same day, Miranda collapsed and died instantly. Doctors are saying she died of severe head trauma. “She was a good girl” Miranda’s mother cried to reporters, “I mean, she was sort of a bully, but she did not deserve to get molly whooped like that, especially with a shovel right to the head”. Emily will not be charged with second degree murder but instead man-slaughter as she was only protecting herself, and succeeded.

Viner Josh Officer subsequently posted a new Vine video in which Lynn reveals that she is alive and is “doing alright” (shown below).

About

Snoop Dogg is the stage name used by Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., an American hip hop recording artist and actor well-known for his uniquely laid-back, soft-spoken style of delivery and widely credited for popularizing the style of gangsta-funk (G-funk) rap in the early 1990s. Outside of his music career, the rapper has also become an international icon within the stoner subculture due to his consistent inclusion of lyrical references to recreational use of cannabis in his songs, and later on, public advocacy of marijuana legalization in the United States.

History

Music Career

The Long Beach, California-based rapper made his career debut in 1992 under the stage name of “Snoop Doggy Dogg with his featured credit on “Deep Cover,” Dr. Dre’s debut solo single released as part of the soundtrack for the 1992 crime thriller film with the same name. He continued to work in collaboration with Dr. Dre, guest featuring on Dr. Dre’s debut solo album The Chronic before eventually releasing his first debut album Doggystyle in 1993 under Death Row Records. Upon its release, the album immediately rose to the number one spot on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, selling nearly a million copies within the first week. Two singles from the album, “Gin & Juice” and “What’s My Name,” were particularly well-received by the critics and fans alike as quintessential tracks that showcase the sounds of west coast hip hop (shown below).

Since his debut in 1992, Snoop Dogg has released 12 studio album, four collaborative albums and 127 singles under several derivative stage-names, most notably Snoop Dogg and Snoop Lion, selling 30 million copies of albums worldwide in aggregate. In addition, the rapper has collaborated with dozens of well-known artists both within the hip hop community and pop music at large, including Tupac Shakur, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Psy, among others (shown below).

Online Presence

On July 6th, 1998, the artist’s official website was registered under the domain SnoopDogg.com, which remains active to this day. Having been a critically acclaimed rapper and pop culture symbol of the stoner subculture, Snoop Dogg commands a large online following from both hip hop and cannabis enthusiast communities in the social media. On March 30th, 2007, the rapper created his official Twitter account under the handle @snoopdogg, which has more than 11.8 million followers, as of January 2015. On March 15th, 2008, the rapper launched his personal YouTube channel WestFestTV, which has drawn more than 1.1 million subscribers and nearly 381 million total channel views in less than five years. As of January 2015, he has over 2 million followers on Facebook on the Calvin Broadus profile[10], 38 million likes on the Snoop Dogg profile[11] and over 11 million followers on Twitter[12].

Fandom

Due to the rapper’s aforementioned reputation as an avid weed smoker, Snoop Dogg has a relatively long history of memetic footprint in the world of online parodies, with some of the first notable online jokes about his love for getting high found on FARK and Something Awul dating back to the early 2000s. Snoop Dogg has also several blogs dedicated to him on Tumblr, like fuckyeahsnoopdogg[5] and Snoop Dogg Doing Awesome Things[6]. He also has a sub-reddit[7] and has done an AMA on the IAmA sub-reddit, using the alias “Here_Comes_The_King”[8]. He is also a moderator for r/trees, a sub-reddit dedicated to weed and weed culture[9].

Parodies

However, Snoop Dogg’s internet fame didn’t reach its first peak until October 2006, when YTMND user Barf created a site titled “Snoop Dogg’s Dreamland (full song),” featuring in-game footage from Kirby Super Star and a mash-up song that combines the theme from the Gourmet Race mini-game level and the chorus line from the rapper’s 2004 hit single “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Later that same month, a second YTMND site[3] featuring enhanced graphics was uploaded by the same author, which has been viewed more than 785,900 times, as of January 2015. On November 1st, 2006, the follow-up version was reuploaded as a video clip to YouTube, where it earned more than 3.4 million views in just under six years.

Following the viral take-off of video game music (VGM) remix parodies set to Snoop Dogg’s rap lyrics in late 2006, both the cutout image of Snoop Dogg and his memorable lyrics soon became incorporated into other sub-genres of remix fads on YouTube, most notably in Montage Parodies, YouTube Poop music videos and Blingee GIFs.

High Impact Sexual Violence is an image macro series featuring close-up avatars of various anime, cartoon and video game characters and the caption “high impact sexual violence,” which is derived from one of the most restrictive ratings that can be assigned to films, video games and publications by the Australian Classification Board, a statutory media censorship and classification agency overseen by the government.

One of the earliest instances in the series can be found in a thread[1] posted on 4chan‘s /v/ board on February 22nd, 2014, in which users discussed Australia’s classification of the PlayStation Vita version of the 2010 roleplaying video game Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland as having an R-18+ (18 years old and up) rating because of “references to sexual violence”, a significant leap from the rating of PG that was given previously to the non-PS Vita version. The thread resulted in the creation of an image captioned “High Impact Violence” (shown below).[2]

Satoru Itawa Holding Bananas (2012)

Satoru Iwata Holding Bananas refers to a pre-recorded clip of Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata staring intently at a banana bunch that was screened during Nintendo’s 2012 E3 press conference. The random placement of Iwata silently looking at the bananas struck a chord with the E3 audiences and many viewers on the web, triggering a series of photoshopped images, parodies and remix videos on various gaming forums and imageboards.

I Feel Just Like a Purple Pikmin (2012)

I Feel Just Like a Purple Pikmin is a memorable quote by Reggie Fils-Aime during the E3 2012 Nintendo Press Conference. The quote was said after the announcement of Pikmin 3 by Shigeru Miyamoto at the beginning of the conference. After Miyamoto left the stage, Reggie stepped up and said the quote “I feel just like a purple pikmin." The phrase quickly began to spread on many video game related video game sites and forums, such as IGN and GameFaqs.

Just Let It Happen, It’ll Be Over Soon (2013)

Just Let It Happen, It’ll Be Over Soon” is a controversial joke made by the producer of Killer Instinct, the upcoming reboot of the 1994 fighting arcade game for XBox One, to his female co-host during their on-stage gameplay demo at Microsoft’s pre-E3 press conference held on June 10th, 2013. During the showcase, the two presenters casually exchanged playful taunts as they try to beat each other and when it became clear that the male producer was dominating the game, he jokingly said to his struggling colleague: “Just let it happen, it’ll be all over soon.”

The banter was reportedly met by some nervous laughter and groans from the audience at the conference, as noted by video game designer Jonathan Blow via Twitter[3] (shown below).

Meanwhile on Twitter[4], the producer’s remark was received far less favorably, with many interpreting the trash talk as an unintended joke about rape and others vilifying the episode as a perpetuation of misogyny and sexism that remains visible in the video gaming world. Blogger Devin Faraci of Badass Digest[5] also chimed in on the troubling implications of the dialogue, while acknowledging that it may have been the heat of the moment that led to the joke (shown below).

In some ways this wasn’t a big deal. The banter was tasteless, and we don’t know how the decision was made as to who would go up against the producer on stage. What makes this a big deal isn’t the fact that it happened, but that it’s indicative of a larger cancer eating away at the gaming community (and, to be fair, many other geek communities, but it seems most horrible in gaming). This, basically, is what institutionalized misogyny looks like.

In contrast to Twitter users, many Redditors quickly went up in arms to dispute the labeling of the producer’s remark as a “rape joke,” spawning several discussion threads on /r/TheRedPill[11], /r/MensRights[12], /r/SRSsucks[13] and /r/SRSGaming.[14]

Trash talking between guys = lol grow a pair
Trash talking between guy and girl = omg he’s talking about rape, he’s raping about rape, rape’s raping rape

The presentation was met by mixed opinions from several internet news sites, including The Atlantic[6], Kotaku[7] and The Huffington Post.[8] Later that same day, a Microsoft spokesperson told the gaming news site Kotaku[9] that the banter was unscripted and apologized for the banter.

“The comments in question during the Killer Instinct demo were not scripted. The demo was meant to include friendly gameplay banter and there was there was no ill intent.”

The Villager (2013)

The Villager (a.k.a Creepy Animal Crossing Villager) is a nickname given to the male protagonist character of Nintendo’s social simulation video game franchise Animal Crossing. Following the announcement of his inclusion as a new character for the Super Smash Brothers franchise in June 2013, fans of the game quickly began characterizing the Villager as a psychotic and ruthless killer through image macros and video remixes.

“A Weapon to Surpass Metal Gear” (2013)

“A Weapon to Surpass Metal Gear” is a catchphrase from the end of the E3 2013 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain extended trailer. The phrase is often used to describe abnormal machinery/weapons, much like tacticool, and because of it’s ambiguity, it has lead to many online discussions about what could actually surpass a metal gear. Because of it’s use in the trailer, videos with the phrase often contain the song Sins of Our Father or Nuclear playing in the background.

Super Smash Bros. Character Announcement Parodies (2013)

Super Smash Bros. 4 Character Announcement Parodies, also known as “Super Smash Bros. Challenger Approaching,” are photoshopped images of character introduction cards for the game Super Smash Brothers as featured during Nintendo’s showcase of its upcoming title Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS/Wii U.

Reggie vs. Iwata (2014)

Reggie vs. Iwata refers to a comical promotional video featuring Nintendo executives Reggie Fils-Aime and Satoru Iwata competing in a battle that was released during the 2014 E3.

About

Fanfiction is literature written by fans of a particular work, often a television series, book or movie, featuring the canonical characters and settings of the work in a new context. Though fanfiction is not a product of the Internet, the web has proliferated this literature to proportions greater than those it could have achieved in print.

History

1800s: Holmes, Austen and Dōjinshi

In the late 19th and early 20th century, fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes[1] series began to pen additional stories using the characters to cope with Conan Doyle killing the character off in the 1893 story “The Final Problem.”[2] In addition to works produced by Conan Doyle’s son, Adrian, a fan publication titled The Baker Street Journal[6] has been operating since 1946. Because of the amount of fan work surrounding Holmes, the fandom was the first to use the term “canon” to distinguish the works written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.[3] Because so many fan stories have been published, many of these works are referred to as “pastiches”[4], a literary term usually reserved for satire. However, the terms “pastiche” and “fan fiction” are used interchangeably[5] in Sherlockian fandom.

Around the same time, author Jane Austen[7] saw fan works created around the characters in her novels, including Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. Her fans call themselves “Janeites”[8], a term coined in 1894 by literary scholar George Saintsbury. In 1913, the book “Old Friends and New Fancies: An Imaginary Sequel to the Novels of Jane Austen”[9] by Sybil G. Brinton was published, incorporating characters from six of Austen’s novels into one story.[10]

During the late 1800s, a similar trend began appearing in Japan with the launch of dōjinshi[13] (同人誌), or self-published, magazines. These often feature a range of works including manga-style stories as well as short novels. The first of these, Meiroku Zasshi (明六雑誌) was first published in 1874. A second magazine, Garakuta Bunko (我楽多文庫) was launched in 1885 solely to focus on fan literature. Dōjinshi saw a surge in popularity in the 1980s, coinciding with the rise of comic fairs specifically for these magazines, including Comiket[14], which is now one of the world’s largest conventions, attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees every year.

1960s: Star Trek

Prior to the mid-1960s, the term “fan fiction” was used by members of the science fiction community to denote amateur sci-fi stories published in zines.[12] In western culture, the rise of modern fan fiction is often contributed to Trekkies, fans of the science fiction television franchise Star Trek. The first Star Trek fanzine, Spockanalia[11] (shown below, left) launched in 1967, containing several fan-written stories. The Star Trek fandom also coined the term “slash” in a 1974 issue of the zine Grup (shown below, right), which is used for homosexual romantic pairings in fan fiction.

FanFiction.net

Fanfiction.net[15] was founded in 1998 by Los Angeles computer programmer Xing Li. The site breaks stories down into nine categories: Anime/Manga, Books, Cartoons, Comics, Games, Miscellaneous, Movies, Plays/Musicals and Television Shows. As of March 2009, crossover categories were put into place for stories that used characters from different works. Within four years, the site accumulated 118,000 registered users, which grew to more than 2.2 million by 2010.[16] The site receives thousands of new stories a day[17]

LiveJournal

After LiveJournal introduced communities in 2000, many fanfiction authors and artists flocked to the site to share their works and collaborate with each others. In May 2007, LiveJournal staff members suspended more than 500 accounts associated with “illegal” interest keywords, including child pornography and rape, a decision contested by many users who claimed that many of the deleted accounts were for role-playing purposes, book discussion groups, rape survivor groups and age-restricted adult fan fiction communities. It was known as The Great Strikethrough or Strikethrough 2007[26][27] for the manner in which suspended account names appeared throughout the site. Many of the journals were later restored, however the event caused many authors and fandom-related bloggers to move to other sites.[28] Despite this, many fandom communities still exist on LiveJournal. As of December 2012, there are 375 communities which list “fan fiction” as an interest.[29]

Yuletide

In 2003, fanfiction author astolat[18] and video maker Tzikeh[19] launched a fanfiction gift exchange challenge for fandoms considered obscure in the community, including characters from a Skrillex music video, the British Railway Network and Bing Crosby and Bob Hope’s 1942 film The Road to Morrocco.[25] Originally called While We Tell of Yuletide Treasure[24], the annual exchange begins with a sign up period throughout November and the final 1000-word pieces are due on Christmas Day, with the authors’ names revealed on New Year’s Day. During the first year, 315 people signed up to participate and stories were delivered via the homepage as well as a LiveJournal community[20] which launched on November 3rd, 2003.[23] In 2009, the exchange moved over to fanfiction hubsite Archive Of Our Own.[21] In 2012, more than 27,000 stories were exchanged from 1500 different fandoms including fairy tales, Greek or Roman mythologies, American Sherlock Holmes television series Elementary and 2012 movie Pitch Perfect.[22]

Kindle Worlds

On May 22nd, 2013, Amazon announced Kindle Worlds[30], a self-service publishing platform that enables its users to submit original works of fanfiction from a selection of licensed works and franchises, including Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars. Upon its official launch in June, the platform will be open for user submission and offer a selection of 50 fanfiction titles written by best-selling and award-winning authors for immediate purchase.

According to the press release, the books will be published by Amazon, who will pay royalties to the rights holder in exchange for all the rights to the work, and directly sold online in the price range of $0.99 and $3.99. Depending on the length of the work, authors will receive royalties of 35% of net revenue for works more than 10,000 words and 20% for works between 5,000 and 10,000 words. In addition, user-submitted content must adhere to the platform’s guidelines, which prohibits pornography, offensive language, copyright-infringing conten, excessive use of brands and crossover plot lines.

That same day, The Daily Dot[32] pointed out the problematic nature of this platform, as most fanfic is made freely available. In its press release, Amazon did not reveal any community-oriented features like editorial or publisher critique, making it seem more like a way for the franchises to cash in on these works. Meanwhile on Tumblr,[33] fanfiction writers similarly expressed their concern about the platform and giving away the rights to their work.[34] Others[35] felt this would disrupt the gift economy[36] of the online fanfiction community, where most works are made freely available without any expectations that anything be given in return. Many commenters on the gossip blog Oh No They Didn’t![37] spoke out against the idea of paying for fanfiction when so much of it is already freely available, likening the Kindle service to paying for online pornography.

In February 2000, the story was used as leverage to cause the Australian government to ban Usenet archive deja.com after the complainant found the story on their site.

My Immortal

My Immortal, published on Fanfiction.net in 2006, became colloquially known as “the worst fanfiction ever” for its asburd storyline and large number of spelling and grammatical errors. Though My Immortal was intended as a Harry Potter fanfiction, it heavily incorporated lyrics from and references to the bands My Chemical Romance and Evanescence, often depicting the young wizards as gothic. Due to the story’s over-the-top nature and the amount of backlash from people claiming the story was only posted to troll other readers, My Immortal was removed from Fanfiction.net

Half-Life: Full Life Consequences

Also in 2006, Half-Life: Full Life Consequences was uploaded to Fanfiction.net by the user squirrelking, who was already known for his error-filled writing. It was introduced to a larger audience in January 2008 when YouTuber Djy1991 uploaded an adaptation of the story created in Garry’s Mod (shown below). As of December 2012, this video has more than 4 million views.

Master of the Universe

A Twilight fanfiction, this story was originally posted to Fanfiction.net sometime prior to 2010, when it was removed for racy adult content. Author E.L. James under her pseudonym “Snowqueens Icedragon” then hosted the story on her personal website for a time. The story was the inspiration for the 2011 best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey, which would go on sell more than 31 million English-language copies across the globe and become the first e-book to sell more than 1 million Kindle copies.

Cupcakes

Originally posted in January 2011, Cupcakes is a gory My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic story depicting Pinkie Pie dismembering Rainbow Dash for special baking ingredients. Though the author is unknown, it was originally posted on 4chan’s /co/ (cartoons and comics) board shortly after episode 12 of the first season aired.

Sweet Apple Massacre

In June 2011, another gory Friendship is Magic-inspired work, Sweet Apple Massacre, began to circulate online after it was posted to Fanfiction.net. This story depicts colt Big Macintosh kidnapping Apple Bloom, Sweetie Bell and Scottalo before torturing, raping and disemboweling them. It was quickly removed from Fanfiction.net for violating their rules but was reposted on several other sites.

Dipper Goes to Taco Bell

Animated cartoon series Gravity Falls fanfiction Dipper Goes to Taco Bell was posted to Fanfiction.net in August 2012. It was taken down within a week for violating the terms of service for depicting the character Dipper Pines and his sister Mabel dying in a Taco Bell before being turned in to taco meat.

About

Gundam is a Japanese space opera anime series created by renowned animator Yoshiyuki Tomino and produced by Sunrise[1]. Since the airing of the original animated TV series Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979, the metaseries has grown a considerable following worldwide.

History

The original Gundam series, titled Mobile Suit Gundam[2], was first broadcast on April 7th, 1979, and finished serialization on January 26th, 1980. The series is set in a fictional universe in which a nation titled “The Principality of Zeon”[3] declares independence from the Earth Federation[4], and soon launches a war of independence. The main plot centers around a newly deployed Earth Federation warship, named the White Base, arriving at a research base to pick up new secret weapon for the Federation. However, they are followed by Zeon forces, who attack White Base, despite orders not to, killing many of the crew and civilians located on the White Base. A citizen named Amuro Ray[5] finds the Federation’s weapon, named the RX-78 Gundam, and solves the problem. The show then follows the adventures of the boy, as well as the new crew aboard the White Base, and how it effects the war. Although the series was not popular at first, the series eventually received critical acclaim, and garnered a large fanbase, becoming one of the most famous anime of all time. The show’s popularity led it to start a large franchise, including around 31 different animated films and series[6], a live action film[7], a number of manga and novelizations[8], and a number of different video games[9].

Online Presence

Gundam has a massive online following, such as on 4chan’s /a/ Anime & Manga[10] and /m/ Mecha[11] boards, as well as on Tumblr[12] and Reddit[13]. Gundam also has a number of groups on DeviantART[14], as well as fan sites such as Gundam Seed Net[15]. There are also multiple Gundam wikis, such as the Gundam wikia[16], as well as a Gundam Fanon wiki[17]. There is also a wide variety of fanart and cosplay, linked with the Gundam series.

About

Dave Remmler, better known by his most prominent online alias, Renard Queenston, is a Canadian furry DJ who produces electronic music under a variety of aliases for his self-run label, LapFox Trax(previously known as VulpVibe Records).[1] His music has become a source for various YouTube Poop Music Videos.

Online History

Renard first joined Fur Affinity on May 22nd, 2006,[2] where he first began uploading his music. His account became more popular after submitting his song “Radioactive Rats [MGD3 GlaDOS Edit]” (shown below) on November 29, 2007,[3] which was the first of his songs to garnish over a thousand views. A few other of his songs broke a thousand views after, including “Homosexual Love Scene [Hands Up [Your Shirt] Remix]”,[4]“Marble Town”,[5] and “Sergalingus”.[6]

Renard’s music further grew in popularity when he made his own YouTube channel.[7] His earliest video, “Coward Killing Time”, was released September 17, 2008. As of May 2015, the video has nearly 400,000 views.[8] In October 2008, a remix of the popular series Half-Life: Full Life Consequences, managed to bring the DJ even more spotlight. While the song has over 5,000 views on FA, “John Freeman” on YouTube has recieved over 370,000 views on the original video as of April 2015.[9] The remix gained the artist a great deal of notoriety among Machinima fans on YouTube, which led to his remix being added to the ending of the Full-Life Consequences finale, “Free Man”.[10] Another one of Renard’s songs, “Outsider”,[11] has been used in an episode of “The GMod Idiot Box”, another series made by Machinima.[12] In 2007, Renard launched a website for his music, titled “VulpVibe”, which was later retired and replaced with “LapFox Trax” in 2009. Again, the website was retired, and the domain is now used for Renard’s official Bandcamp.[14]

YTPMV

Renard’s music is often used as background music in YTPMV. Notable songs used in YTPMV include Intensive Care Unit, Rock My Emotions, Rainbow Tylenol and Avast Your Ass.

Personal Life

Renard is 26 years old and currently lives in Hamilton, Canada. Renard claims to be agender, and prefers gender-neutral pronouns when referred to. Renard used to be in a relationship with SqueedgeMonster, who did most of the cover art for Renard’s albums, until they broke up some time in August 2013.

Sexual Assault Controversy

In 2014, Tumblr user Nishimikan made a text post accusing Renard for sexual assault, saying that Renard gropes people in their sleep, with her being one of the victims. Nishimikan claims that she has made the post to “raise awareness” of Renard’s actions. Shortly after, the post was shared to the Lapfox Trax subreddit, where it gained 40 points (82% upvoted) and 96 comments.[16] The original post has been deleted, but was archived on the Flash Flash Revolution forums.[13]

there’s a post going around that i want to address--i’m the author of the text file in the post in question (and thus the one who took the file down cause i really did NEED to make this post!)
[sexual assault warning in readmore]
i stand by what i said, absolutely. i am upset that a post of this nature was made without first consulting me explicitly--things on tumblr tend to explode and in this case, the person who would experience fallout is me.
as background:
ren and i were in a fairly sexual relationship, not a romantic one. we had our boundaries, but our most prominent one was “ask before any touching is done”. i have post-traumatic stress disorder, relating to a lot of sexual trauma, and when i am touched unprovoked, i am “dead in the water”. this boundary was placed in december of 2012 because ren experienced it first-hand with an event i can’t talk about now.
with this background, here is what i want you all to know:
ren has a self-admitted problem with groping people when they think they’re sleeping. they acknowledge that what they did to me was wrong but mention going to therapy for it, something that i, as the victim, am not comfortable with.
they also mention it being something they do in their sleep, but i find that bogus because of finer details during the actual groping state to me that ren was awake the entire time. i do not trust them in this situation, because they have betrayed my trust regarding being up front with things with me before (see below)
during the times when ren would visit, this so-called “sleep-groping” problem would happen a multitude of times--my PTSD makes it hard for me to remember specific numbers, but a ballpark estimate of how many times it’s happened to me is 10-15 (in two visits).
now, ren has admitted that they were aware of the problem when it occurred, but they did not elect to speak to me, their (at the time) sexual partner and (at the time) friend. this is troubling at its base level, but becomes a little more troubling when you remember that they are aware that my PTSD renders me immobile.
ren had one year to tell me that cuddling with them might be unwise because of their self-admitted “sleep-groping” habits, but did not do so and did not make any move to do so during the time i knew them. during that one year, i did not receive any communication regarding their “sleep problem”, despite the faith i put into them when another event happened, one i’m not comfortable reiterating now.
ren says that they’re seeking therapy for the events in question and for their “sleep problem”, but they told me the same thing when they did something to me the first time. i trust that they’re trying, but for the sake of your safety and my peace of mind, i’ve made this post so people are aware of the situation.
in short:
ren queenston has a tendency to touch people sexually in their sleep. be aware of this.
this is troubling, to say the absolute least. but that’s why i’m making this post, to raise awareness. they need to learn, and leaving them alone for a year for them to “get treatment” did not help the first time, and i doubt it will help now.
they need to be held accountable for their actions.
for the sake of my own safety:
i’m planning on receiving treatment for my own sexual trauma, and for any other issues that may have arisen during my time knowing ren. i cannot answer every question that comes my way, and though i appreciate the sentiments, i do not want to be bombarded with kind words either.
i am a very private person, and will deal with this issue in my own way, and for me privacy is extremely valuable here, so while i understand you have questions, i cannot answer them because i am under an inordinate amount of stress from confronting them about this issue myself.
please respect a victim’s privacy, meaning: ask them about posts before you make them, even if they say it’s okay to post. i would have loved to know about that post before it went out, but i did not, and i doubt anyone else in my situation would have appreciated it.
i understand that many of you are ren’s fans, but what they did to me was absolutely inexcusable and unforgivable. i make this post for the sake of your awareness.
anyway i’m quite wordy so i’m ending this here. take care.

Renard has responded to the claim, and has admitted to have groped Nishimikan, and that Nishimikan has talked about the matter with Renard, forgiving Renard for the assaults as he suffered from parasomnia. Renard has also posted various IM logs of Renard and Nishimikan, where in one case Nishimikan expressed her sexual desires towards Renard late at night. Renard had called out Nishimikan in the post for emotionally abusing Renard despite her PTSD claims and for publicly dubbing Renard as an abuser and rapist.[15]

Editor’s Note: the following text contains detailed and explicit recounts of sexual interaction (incl. mentions of abuse)

in December 2012, i had an awkward sexual encounter with Nishi. we had been cuddle buddies for a short while and there had been discussion of the idea of a “friends with benefits” type relationship if and when they might be ready to pursue it. one evening of cuddling ended up with them huddled up beside me giving me tummy rubs, their hand moving up and down throughout, dipping lower each time and at one point grazing my crotch. i read this as a signal that things were okay to continue and got fidgety and grindy and ended up grinding against their hand through my underwear. they didn’t pull their hand away and continued to rub until i climaxed. they asked after the fact if “it was good” and said that it had “been a while since they touched a weenie”. i asked if they were doing okay and they said yes. admittedly my next words were poorly chosen: “okay, i’m glad, i know you aren’t stupid enough to lie about that”. i had been referring to the fact that i know they’ve been in bad sexual situations prior and that i trusted them to make me aware if anything was wrong.

after this we didn’t talk for a while. we both told our stories to mutual friends though (whether or not any of these friends are willing to speak up about what they were told is up to them alone. i will not drag others into this directly), and from what i’ve been told they generally lined up with the story i just told without my influence. however, upon Nishi posting about our relationship last month, their side of the story has changed drastically to include details including me grabbing their hand and putting it on my crotch. up until now, this had not been a part of it.

eventually we talked it over and agreed that it was poor communication on both of our parts – that i shouldn’t take queues without full communication and need to be vocal about situations in advance, and that they needed to be upfront about how they actually felt about the situation. this was our mutual agreement and defined ways in which we’d better equip ourselves for whatever was next for us.

over time we grew close again and toward the end of the relationship i was involved with at the time me and Nishi became involved in a master / pet relationship. i was the master in the relationship and in this kind of thing, communication about everything is important. i made sure it was always at the forefront. i had known that what happened in December was a problem and that i couldn’t let anything like that happen again, so we talked about things a lot. we talked about what we wanted to do and what we felt we were capable to do. there was a lot of teasing eachother and being playful about sex in general.

up until Rainfurrest 2013, we discussed more and more what we’d be comfortable with doing or wanted to do (we ended up not doing a lot of things we wanted to for comfort reasons). we kept teasing eachother, shared pics, fantasies, stories, etc for the duration.

Rainfurrest 2013 rolled around in September and we explored a lot of the sexual activities we discussed prior. there was a lot of “is this okay,” “more of this / less of this,” “do you want to do this,” and communication was something i made important. as far as i could tell, based on the consent given, based on the way they would tease me with their body and pull me against them with their legs among other things, everything was great. the amount of times i looked into their eyes and saw them smile after we’d have any interaction reassured me that things were good and i had been doing the right thing by being communicative and clear.

i extended my visit just over a week and invited Nishi to come back to the hotel and stay with me. i was a sobbing mess at the time because of how much fun i had with them and how much i cared about them and how anxious i was about leaving so quickly. i’m aware of the influence my anxiety had in this situation. Nishi arrived back at the hotel smiling and bundled up and got unpacked again.

the days came and went and things were generally fun throughout. there were bumpy spots of stress and anxiety influenced by outside factors, but i had no reason to believe that i had done anything bad. one night we wrestled eachother in the nude on the bed and i was sure we both had a lot of fun doing it. they’d pin me down provacatively and relish in it, i’d try to pin back and accidentally hurt them doing it (i’m really bad at wrestling; in their recount of things i was “contorting their limbs painfully”), but if they said “ow” i’d let go immediately, apologize, and we’d continue.

they left me a note after RF reading “i’m not good w/ words, but i think of all the people i know, i feel closest to you. you’ve done a lot for me and i wouldn’t existr if not for you and your presence. thank you for everything!” i had no reason to believe that anything was wrong at all. i was sure that our relationship was happy and healthy based on how things had gone and the indications i was given.

(full page: http://cl.ly/image/1c1V371o3929)

we remained in constant contact after that and they would occasionally talk about how much fun they had doing this thing or that thing during our visit and also admitted they thought they overextended their comfort sexually. i understood this and told them it’s good that they told me so we can both be more comfortable next time. this was the only issue that was ever brought to my attention. other than that, things were as they were, and nishi continued to talk about the things they enjoyed doing, and teased me publicly / semi-publicly a few times as well, in streams, on secondlife, etc. they continued to express interest in being involved with me sexually despite anything that could have been wrong.

through October and November, Nishi continued to express interest in me as a sexual partner, and while they admitted to overextending themselves sexually, continued to reminisce on how good things were during my visit in September. here is a series of tweets that i should probably share as well, as they prove expressed intent and enjoyment of what is now being cast as a series of abusive incidents in September (including a reference to us wrestling) and show the intention to interact sexually again in the future.

at this point we had also been considering the idea of Nishi visiting me in March, as not being stuck in a hotel for an extended period sounded like a relaxing time for both of us. we had discussed previously the idea of getting Nishi a pet bed to put near me while i work during the day.

[04:05] Nishi: i want to sleep w/ u too but if i were to like, hang around next to your desk

[04:08] Nishi: i’m imagining u working on music stuff and gently instructing me and run

i visited again in December and on my way there they told me that they felt really weird about physical contact pretty much as i got on the plane and i let them know it was perfectly okay. i was bummed out and had some adjusting to do after our previous visit was so charged with it and since things switched on such short notice, but i was okay with it. we didn’t do much cuddling, and when it wasn’t okay, they let me know they weren’t up to it and i’d back off and apologize. communication was still paramount and consistent as far as i knew. i came back and again was not given any sign that anything had been wrong at all. i was given the complete opposite even after my return home.

(secondlife IM logs)
[2013/12/22 06:30] nishi (spookyavery): i looooOOOOOOOVE u
[2013/12/22 06:30] nishi (spookyavery): if i don’t make it out of this sickness alive i love u
[2013/12/22 06:30] nishi (spookyavery): and i will always cherish the times we have had together

over the next couple weeks, we grew a little distant, and myself a little hestitant. i was curious as to if anything was wrong, so i ended up bringing it up and asking if there was anything i should know.

Session Start (renqueenston:Nishi): Wed Jan 15 21:01:07 2014 -0500
[21:03] REN Q.: i guess i’m concerned about any vagueness or whatever in regards to our relationship and our feelings? we obv have diff kinds of anxiety that can definitely be a bit abraisive against eachother and i think clarity is important so it can be smoothed out
[21:04] Nishi: srry, i’m trying to parse this statement so gimme a sec
[21:05] REN Q.: basically just “is there anything you aren’t saying about yr feelings irt me or how you feel about me” so things can be easier for both of us
[21:06] Nishi: ohh, okay! thanks for the rewording
[21:07] Nishi: there’s not really anything i’m feeling about you specifically, i’m just having more of those leftover feelings about the december thing i guess. they come and go, and with all the rest of the stress i’ve been having, it’s been hard for me to… think them through? i guess?
[21:08] Nishi: i mean i fixate on things like that cause events like that get blown up by my PTSD so that’s why i’ve been hesitant to talk about it…? and there isn’t really anything anyone can say really
[21:08] REN Q.: (nodnod) i understand
[21:08] Nishi: i don’t feel anything bad about you at all, i really appreciate u as a person and as The Owner (if that’s still what u feel about that w/ me)
[21:09] REN Q.: i absolutely feel like The Owner!
[21:09] REN Q.: i totally get you needing space and it’s good to know when you do need it so i can be level headed and not confused so hearing it directly is good
[21:09] Nishi: i just get anxiety regarding situations, and it’s much easier for me to… “deal” with it (?) when i have a bit of disconnection from the people involved
[21:09] Nishi: yesterday i was absolutely FURIOUS about it so i’m very sorry if i came across as cold or such
[21:10] REN Q.: no it’s very okay, we have feelings and they need to be expressed
[21:10] REN Q.: i’m just glad i could clear this up for myself to better understand how you’re feeling so i can act better
[21:11] Nishi: it’s not really a matter of anyone acting any such way i guess (?
)

. . .

[21:15] Nishi: anyway i’ve basically been more stressed out in the past few days than i have been in quite a while and i’m sorry it affected you as a result
[21:15] REN Q.: hey it’s okay, i guess maybe just hmmm
[21:15] Nishi: i’m gonna try to be more straightforward about it but i also made that excessively private twitter for me to say things into, so i won’t need to vent so often
[21:15] REN Q.: since our relationship is a bit more tightly knit than most it is good to know at some point why things are happening? i think its beneficial to both of us
[21:15] REN Q.: its haaaard to be blunt but
[21:15] REN Q.: when we’re both mentally able to
[21:16] Nishi: well, i can right now (??) i just can’t really get into the details of that other thing
[21:16] REN Q.: yeah i understand
[21:16] Nishi: i can’t really say why exactly i’m thinking of the december thing right now because lol ptsd just pops in sometimes

it was clear to me that Nishi had been thinking about what happened in 2012, something that i was sure we had ironed out. for their health’s sake, i didn’t press it. in retrospect it’s clear, though, that what happened in December 2013 (the sleep groping incident) was on their mind and the reason behind things here and now. they still failed to communicate that it had even happened, though, despite me asking for clarity if something was wrong. Nishi never brought it to my attention until very shortly before the public callout. they say directly “there’s not really anything i’m feeling about you specifically”.

our connection was fizzling. i grew increasingly uncomfortable around their problems and realized i needed room away from them and to focus on myself and my own issues and health a little bit more. i told them directly that i needed to distance myself, and that i didn’t feel it was safe to have them visit me in March (this had been in the pipeline for months and still was).

Session Start (renqueenston:Nishi): Wed Jan 15 23:45:58 2014 -0500
[23:47] REN Q.: i’m fully aware you probably are not okay to talk about it but this is an important and immediate issue. i’m really sorry about this, and i still really want to see you but i can’t safely have you visit in march. i can’t put myself in a place where i’m legally responsible for somebody with self-harm and substance abuse tendencies. i figured telling you before you went all the way with the passport was better than waiting.
[23:48] Nishi: ah… okay, i’m sorry
[23:48] Nishi: thanks for telling me now
[23:48] Nishi: i’m still going ahead and getting my passport for the sake of having one, but thanks
[23:48] REN Q.: you don’t need to apologize to me. this isn’t a case of dislike, this is a case of things that i can and cannot deal with
[23:48] Nishi: i know, i just
[23:49] Nishi: it’s my thing to apologise
[23:49] Nishi: is it ok if i ask a paranoia question
[23:49] REN Q.: absolutely
[23:50] Nishi: you don’t hate me do you
[23:50] Nishi: sorry that’s a. bad question to ask
[23:51] REN Q.: no, i don’t hate you. i probably feel the furthest from hate for you tbh. the things that you’re dealing with that i can’t deal with have no bearing on how i feel about You, because i know You.

between then and my next contact with them – just two days later – i had noticed a couple friends disappearing from the twitter account i was using at the time, as well as my instant message contact list. after i was told directly what had happened, i knew that nishi had been talking about something that i wasn’t even fully aware had happened to others before telling me.

Session Start (renqueenston:Nishi): Fri Jan 17 15:39:10 2014 0500
[15:39] Nishi: ren, just to make sure you understand:
[15:39] Nishi: everything i am upset about is regarding the sleep groping
[15:39] Nishi: september had no problems when we were both awake because you were good about consent then, except when i would wake up with hands all over the place.
[15:40] Nishi: because during that time, i had no chance to say “okay” before because i can’t respond when i am asleep
[15:41] Nishi: if it is something you do in your sleep, then so be it, that is fine
-i did not hear about any of it until now, though.

my history of parasomnia-related issues is fuzzy at best, but since the beginning of this situation and i’ve voiced concern about it, my parents told me that i used to argue with people in my sleep (not actual people, like, dream people) when i lived back home, have difficulty breathing while asleep, used to suffer night terrors, and a past partner let me know that sleep sex / parasomnia-related events had happened to them, as well. with this partner there were a couple times i’d woken up mid-sex and be convinced that they initiated it, and other times i’d hazily wake up after falling asleep cuddling then roll over and fully doze off again. me and this partner had only ever talked about it in any real detail once and it was never made to be an issue. just that it had happened a couple times and that it may have even been “kind of nice”. i had no reason to believe this was a common occurrence. though, when Nishi told me what i had done, i had no reason to doubt that it happened, and owned up to it, although i was defensive and shitty about it initially, trying to make things about my issues with them instead. this was a mistake that i own in full and realize that it’s a nasty extension of ego-driven tendencies.

[15:53] Nishi: i wish you luck with everything but i do not trust you to make this improvement by yourself--i’ve given many chances for you to make the difference by yourself, but if you can’t tell someone that “i have a problem with sleep groping” no matter the context, then there is an undeniable problem i cannot sit back and go “it’ll be fixed” with.
[15:54] Nishi: anyway, again. i wish you the best.
[15:54] Nishi: goodbye.

all things said, of course i can’t tell somebody about something i’m not aware is an issue and that was “let slide” several times without mentioning at all. if the “chances” i’ve been given include the incident in December 2012, then there was one, and we agreed that it was an issue of miscommunication. to be silently given chances about something i’m completely unaware is happening is something of an issue.

Nishi outed me publicly as an abuser and rapist the next day online. i owned up to the fact that i had groped them in my sleep and have since stepped away from the internet to learn more about myself and fix the problems that i can fix, including things related to my egocentricism and trying to line up a sleep lab to further understand what happens when i sleep once i did find out through my therapist that sex-related parasomnia, referred to as sexsomnia, is indeed a thing. sleep labs are difficult to line up here, with long waiting lists and starting this summer, a single sleep lab per lifetime unless there needs to be a health-related followup. it’s a crapshoot insofar as learning anything – one night could never reveal years of sporadic issues – but something i’m trying to get together as i feel being able to be prescribed clonazepam could be beneficial. therapy has also been excellent. i’ve been able to finally find the sources of my anxiety and begin to quell it, and i’m finally beginning to understand how to better respect myself, and that speaking up about these accusations is part of that.

i cannot emphasize enough: “everything i am upset about is regarding the sleep groping,” “september had no problems when we were both awake because you were good about consent then,” “if it is something you do in your sleep, then so be it, that is fine,” are the things Nishi told to me directly. some days after this, Nishi would go on to slam our entire relationship as a series of grotesque abusive incidents and twist words like “we were wrestling and ren sucks at it” into “ren contorted my limbs painfully”. the things i’ve heard them say about me are ludicrous. things like “Ren fetishizes Japanese culture and that’s why they abused me”. there have been outright fabrications and baseless assumptions about me.

i know that despite my wrongs, i am being wronged and have been emotionally abused by Nishi throughout this. they need to take responsibility for their actions as well. our relationship was based on communication from the start. i was extremely communicative of everything i could be, and they agreed to do the same. i did not communicate about my parasomnia because i didn’t know it was even an actual recurring issue. when it was brought to light (not with Nishi), it was not made to sound like “it happens all the time” or that it was bad. Nishi did not tell me in September that it happened, and continued to not tell me in December, all the way up to two days after i told them i could not have them visiting me and needed to distance myself from them and their problems. i was blindsided by this in every way imaginable. Nishi talked behind my back instead of telling me what was wrong and made things into a spectacle. if all of what Nishi has said is true of the relationship in full, then they were not communicative and completely defied its importance despite me pushing to be the most communicative i’ve ever been in a relationship. if Nishi genuinely believes the things that they are saying about our relationship, I was manipulated throughout the course of it and lied to persistently. if Nishi decided after i said “i need to distance myself” that they have been uncomfortable with things, then I’m sorry, but no. you cannot claim comfort every step of the way in every percievable way and then change your mind months later. if this were okay, everybody that had ever been the subject to anybody else’s ill will after the end of a relationship would be subject to a potential callout as an abuser and/or rapist. you cannot decide “oh nevermind that was a bad idea” and call somebody out as an abuser and/or rapist. doing that is abusive to the person that trusted you to be honest with them, and you are making abuse cases harder for people to take seriously.

since they’ve come out about this, the amount of times they’ve said outright that they felt obligated to say yes because they were “afraid they’d lose me as a friend” or something like that is staggering and that responsibility lies on their shoulders, not mine. going into December i knew there wasn’t going to be any sex, and i was still a friend to them. what reasoning did they ever have to feel that i would treat things otherwise? in other situations, though, if i am given signals in every way that somebody is okay with having sex, then that’s how i’m going to read it. all i’m getting out of any of this is that Nishi regrets being involved in things at all because they ended up being hurt by me pushing away from their problems and that these regrets are being twisted to put me at fault and make me out to be an abuser.

i’m fully aware of the ways i’ve hurt people. i know 5-6 years ago i was in a particularly bad relationship with somebody where i was an unforgivable shithead. i took a lot from that relationship and the guilt i carry is what drives me to be a better person. i was 19 years old and i’m going on 26 now. i’ve learned so much since then and i am not that same person. i understand that some people may not understand how long ago this happened, as when this relationship was talked about, it was prefaced with “a while ago”. i’ve wanted to apologize since then but had no clue how to approach it. so i’m doing it now: i’m sorry for everything. i’m sorry for the awful jokes and how i talked down to you. i’m sorry for the cheating. i’m sorry for the insincerity and just being shit in a lot of ways.

i’m sorry for what i actually did. i’m sorry that my condition resulted in somebody being hurt. i am sorry that i’ve been so pushy and so domineering socially for the past almost-year of my life. i’m sorry that i’ve exercised some amount of egocentricism over the past god-knows-how-long. i’m sorry that i pushed my ideals and beliefs the way i did. i know for a fact that i ended up hurting people i never wanted to hurt with accusations and words. i am not going to apologize for the shit bing spun about me and the relationship i was in, though. there is blame being cast that i am not going to carry. somebody’s regrets are not my abuse.

i will be continuing my therapy and distancing myself from social networks. i have realized how unheatlhy twitter really has been for me and need to push away from the “always connected, instant gratification” of people always listening. i am going to continue doing what i need to do and i hope that all involved with this to any extent do the same. i ask that people consider this situation critically, make up their own minds, and respsect the privacy of all parties involved. harassment is uncalled for and i will ask that people do not harass Nishi or “retaliate” for me or for anybody affected by their actions. i did not want to have to bring up the amount of information i have, but at this point, it’s completely necessary.

Upon arriving at the Taco Bell, he orders a taco and takes a bite before suddenly suffering from diarrhea. While in the bathroom, Dipper ends up getting turned on by his feces and various other bodily fluids. After a while, Dipper accidentally cuts himself and dies from loss of blood. The fanfic was largely met by shocked and gruesome reactions, with many feedback posts found under the tag “dipper goes to taco bell” on Tumblr[2], DeviantArt[3] and YouTube[4]. Barack Obama and his social media staff are very active online, often interacting with constituents via Twitter and Tumblr. On July 6th, 2011, Obama held the first virtual Town Hall meeting[17] by soliciting questions via the hashtag #AskObama. After receiving 169,395 tweets, an algorithm was used to identify the tweets that were engaged with the most by either favorites or retweets from a panel of selected Twitter users. The chosen questions were then read live to the president, who tweeted his answers.

That October, Barack Obama established a Tumblr blog[18], allowing users to submit stories about the President and his 2012 campaign. On October 28th, 2012, Facebook removed a post made by the “Special Operation Speaks”[7] (SOS) conservation political organization which included an image macro featuring photos of Obama next to Osama bin Laden with the caption “Obama called the SEALs and THEY got bin Laden / When the SEALs called Obama, they got denied” (shown below). After being notified by Facebook that the image violated the companies statement of rights and responsibilities, SOS reuploaded the image, resulting in a 24-hour freeze of their account.

On October 30th, the current events blog Breitbart[8] published a post titled “Facebook reverses, allows SEALs’ Post Critical of Obama,” which reported that Facebook manager Andrew Noyes had informed Breitbart that the removal of the image was an error and not an act of censorship. The same day, comedian Dennis Miller tweeted that Obama was responsible for the removal of the image macro (shown below).

On October 31st, Slate[6] published an article titled “Did Facebook Censor an Anti-Obama Meme?”, which included another statement from Notes stating that the take down was a result of a User Operations Team member removing an image they shouldn’t have.

Injury Rumor on Twitter

At 1:07 p.m. (ET) on April 23rd, 2013, The Associated Press (AP) reported that President Obama had been injured in an explosion at the White House via its Twitter account.

Three minutes later, AP reporter Sam Hananel tweeted that the news agency’s Twitter account has been hacked and the message should be ignored.

Despite Hananel’s correction, the message became retweeted more than 3,000 times in the span of four minutes before Twitter suspended the account at 1:14 p.m. (ET), according to The Next Web.[23] Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average immediately plummeted (shown below) in response to the false rumor, though it quickly rebounded once the tweet was debunked as a lie.

Within the next hour, AP reporter Mike Baker confirmed via Twitter that the account had been hacked not long after several staff members received phishing emails (shown below). That same day, the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) took responsibility for the hack via its Twitter account @Official_SEA6[22], which was subsequently suspended. In the months leading up to the AP hack, the group managed to compromise the accounts of the BBC Weather, NPR and 60 Minutes.

In the first 24 hours, the controversy was reported on by several news sites, including The Daily Dot,[21] Foreign Policy,[27] Al Jazeera,[24] Forbes[25] and Business Insider.[26]

David Ortiz’ Selfie with Obama

On April 1st, 2014, Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz tweeted a selfie with President Obama during his visit to the White House with his teammates. Seven minutes after Ortiz tweeted the photo, it was retweeted by Samsung’s Mobile US account to its 5.2 million followers with the caption: "Big Papi, Big Selfie. RT @DavidOrtiz What an honor! Thanks for the #selfie, @BarackObama " In the following week, Ortiz’ tweet gained more than 42,000 retweets and 49,000 favorites.

The selfie was quickly revealed as a marketing stunt staged for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, which prompted the White House Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer to release a statement during his TV appearance on CBS Face the Nation on April 6th:

“In general, whenever someone tries to use the president’s likeness to promote a product, that’s a problem. We’ve had conversations with Samsung about this and have expressed our concerns.”

““Maybe this will be the end of all selfies.”

On April 7th, Pfeiffer’s remarks were repeatedly quoted in the news as a hint that presidential selfies may soon be banned, but when asked for more details, the White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday there’s “no discussion of a ban” on presidential selfies. Meanwhile, Samsung acknowledged that Ortiz had a sponsorship deal with the company but insisted that the selfie itself wasn’t premeditated.

Usage of Verbal Pauses

Though Barack Obama is known as an exceptional orator[11], he is often critiqued for his use of non-lexical fillers[12] such as “huh” and “umm.” In March 2008, late night host David Letterman compiled a supercut of one of the President’s speeches in order to count how many times he used these verbal pauses.

In March 2009, blogger Bob McCarty[13] analyzed a textual transcript of a White House news conference, finding the President used a version of “huh” a total of 319 times, once every nine seconds. Since he has been elected, Obama has been criticized for this manner of speech by several outlets including on Yahoo! Answers[14], political blog Hot Air[15], news blog The Blaze[16] and as a part of Obama’s portrayal on Saturday Night Live.

Related Memes

Obama has often been the subject of videos, image macros and animated GIFs. On April 6th, 2012, the tech news blog Mashable[20] published a post titled “10 Barack Obama Memes Worthy of Your Vote,” which featured several notable animated GIFs of the president (shown below, top).

The Hope Poster

The Obama “Hope” Poster is an iconic image of Obama created by graphic designer and street artist Shepard Fairey[1] during the 2008 United States presidential election. Made with a stylized stencil of an Associated Press photograph of then U.S. Senator Obama, the posters were created independently of the official campaign. After the image was shared online, parodies of the poster depicting other notable figures and characters began appearing as well, mimicking the red, beige and blue color scheme of the original version.

While it was intended to emphasize the role of government in fostering the growth of American businesses, the soundbite quickly disseminated across the conservative political blogosphere and spawned a bipartisan debate on income taxes and other economic policy issues.

Cell Phone Photo

In late October of 2012, an Associated Press photographer took a picture of Obama on the phone at a campaign fundraiser event in Orlando, Florida (shown below). According to a tweet by ABC news reporter Devin Dwyer[3] on October 28th, the photo was taken after Obama realized the he had called the wrong number.

“Hi is this Ann? Hi, is this Ann? Oh, I’m sorry, I must have the wrong number.”

On November 1st, 2012, Redditor Liberationdemonology submitted the photograph to the /r/pics subreddit in a post titled “My New Favorite Picture of President Obama.” Within 24 hours, the post received over 53,500 up votes and 2,400 comments, which included several image macros and animated GIFs (shown below). The following day, notable examples from the Reddit post were highlighted on the Internet news blogs The Daily Dot[4] and UpRoxx.[5]

Thanks, Obama!

“Thanks, Obama!” is a sarcastic expression used by critics of President Barack Obama to blame personal troubles and inconveniences on public policies supported or enacted by the administration. The phrase is often used to caption animated GIFs in which the subject appears to be struggling with a rather simple task, satirizing those who scapegoat Obama as the cause of problems for which he has little or no influence.

Obama is Checking Your Email

On June 6th, 2013, The Guardian[28] published an article reporting on a secret United States National Security Agency (NSA) program named “PRISM”, which granted the agency the power to gain direct access to search history, emails, file transfers and live chats from various Internet services, including those provided by Google, Facebook and Apple. On June 8th, the “Obama is Checking Your Email” Tumblr[29] blog was launched to mock the Obama administration’s involvement in the surveillance scandal, highlighting various photographs of Obama staring at computer monitors and smart phone screens as if he is spying on private citizens (shown below).

Two days later on June 10th, several news and tech sites highlighted notable examples from the Tumblr blog, including BuzzFeed,[30] The Daily Dot,[31] Mashable[32] and the New York Daily News.[33] The same day, Redditor sligowaths posted a link to the blog on the /r/toosoon[34] subreddit, where it gained upwards of 820 up votes and 40 comments in the first 24 hours.

About

Apple Inc. is an American consumer electronics company[1] known for pioneering the Macintosh personal computer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as well as the portable MP3 player in the early 2000s. It is perhaps best known for its “iProducts,” such as the iPod and iPhone, which have become so ubiquitous within the Western culture that the company has developed an enormous following referred to as the Cult of Mac by some observers.[3] With the commercial success of iProducts, the company quickly grew into the largest publicly-traded corporation in the world and the largest technology company in the world, both by profit and revenue[2]. Despite this, the corporation has been criticized for unethical labor, business, legal, and environmental practices.[2]

Online History

Apple was established on April 1st, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne to sell the Apple I personal computer kit and the company was formally incorporated on January 3rd, 1977. In the following years, Apple released its second and third generation of the personal computer, although they were met by lukewarm reception. Beginning in the early 1980s, Apple’s personal computer line was succeeded by Lisa and the Macintosh products.

iProducts

On August 15th, 1998, Apple charted a new era in the company’s history with the release of iMac, a new line of personal computers. Apple declared the “i” in iMac to stand for “Internet” and also representative of the product’s focus as a personal device (‘i’ for “individual”). In the following years, Apple purchased a number of software companies to build its consumer-oriented digital production applications, including iMovie, Final Cut Pro and iPhoto among others. On October 23rd, 2001, Apple unveiled the portable digital audio player known as iPod, which became the company’s most commercially successful product with over 100 million units sold within six years.

Apple WWDC 2013

On June 10th, 2013, Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where it unveiled a new Mac Pro desktop computer encased in a 6.6’’ x 9.9’’ black cylindrical aluminum case (shown below), a drastic departure in design from previous models.

Shortly after the product’s debut, many Twitter users compared the computer’s design to various cylindrical objects found in popular films or households, including a prop from the science fiction film series Star Trek, a can of deodorant[16] and a futuristic roll of toilet paper.[17] Later that day, the tech news blog Mashable[12] published a post highlighting several notable tweets about the product.

Also on June 10th, Redditor codemaster submitted an image macro to the /r/funny[13] subreddit, which featured a promotional photograph for the new Mac Pro with the character Professor Farnsworth from the animated television series Futurama identifying the computer as a rectal suppository (shown below, left).[13] Several hours later, Redditor AbrahamAshley posted a photoshopped image of a cat sleeping on top of the product to the /r/apple[14] subreddit (shown below right). In the first 24 hours, the posts gained upwards of 7,200 and 660 up votes respectively.

Many Internet users pointed out that the product’s design looks similar to the iconic helmet worn by the antagonist Darth Vader from the science fiction franchise Star Wars. On June 11th, German artist Hilmar Stehr posted a photoshopped image of the new Mac Pro combined with Vader’s helmet titled “Darth Pro” (shown below).[15]

iPhone 5S & 5C Unveiled

On September 10th, 2013, Apple unveiled two new iPhone products 5S, the successor to iPhone 5 with a faster processor and other new features, and 5C, a lower-cost model that comes in a plastic case with several new color options.

As per usual, Apple’s announcement of new phones was preceded by high anticipations and speculations surrounding its features like fingerprint-scanning technology, as well as a few parody ads mockingly introducing iPhone 5S as more of the “Same” and iPhone 5C as the “Cheapass” product (shown below).

iPhone 6 Unveiled

On September 9th, 2014, Apple unveiled two new iPhones: the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus. The new models[18] will be larger and stronger than the model that proceeded them.

Much of the online attention after the annoucement was focused on an out of style infinety scarf[20] worn by a keynote speaker during the livestream announcement of the new models. Within hours of the announcement the parody Twitter account Keynotescarf[19] was created, in less than a day the account gained over 200 followers. The scarf and the online reaction was covered the same day by several sites including Buzzfeed[21] and Mashable.[22]

Apple Smartwatch

On September 9th, 2014, Apple unveiled its first smart watch,[23] which features a health tracker and allows users to sync their iPhone to it.

Twitter users posted many mocking images of “smart watches” under the corresponding tag #iWatch which poked fun at the new device. With 24 hours the hashtag[24] was tweeted out over 54,000 times.

U2 Album Promotion Backlash

On September 9th, 2014, during Apple’s press conference for the unveiling of the iPhone 6, Tim Cook was joined by Bono, the frontman of U2, to make an announcement that the Irish rock band’s latest album Songs of Innocents would be available free of charge for for all iTunes store[25] users.

However, as Apple device users began noticing that the album had been automatically downloaded without their consent, many took their irritation to the social media outlets and Apple’s support forum,[26] including Apple user AMSayer who submitted the following post:

“How do I remove the free U2 album from my iTunes library? So we all have a free U2 album in our iTunes library now. I don’t like U2 and don’t want it. I get an option to ‘hide’ it in iTunes, but not to delete it. How can I remove it entirely from my library in iCloud? I have just been to iCloud.com, but can’t see anything there.”

The same day, Buzzfeed[29] posted a round-up of people reacting to the release in a post titled “People Were Less Than Psyched About U2 At The Apple Event.” On September 10th, The Washington Post [27] published an article titled “U2, Apple and rock-and-roll as dystopian junk mail," which criticized Apple and U2’s method of delivery in the promotional event:

“On Tuesday afternoon, U2’s new album was just there, waiting for you. Like an Ikea catalogue. Or a jury summons. Or streptococcus. The latest inescapable unpleasantry for anyone who’s chosen to participate in our great digital society -- more specifically, the 500 million human beings on this planet who use iTunes.”

On September 15th, iTunes began to offer a tool[28] which allows users to remove the album from their library.

#Bendgate

On September 21st, Macrumors Forum[30] user hanzoh published a new thread titled “iPhone 6 Plus slightly bent after 2 days” which explained their experience with the new iPhone 6, saying:

“I received my iPhone 6 Plus 64GB spacegray at about 3pm on Friday and set it up, but haven’t worn it out that day, so it wasn’t in my pocket.

Yesterday, I left at 10am with the iPhone in my left FRONT pocket of my suit pants. I drove 4 hours to a wedding, which also involved a lot of sitting during dinner etc but also 2-3 hours of dancing. I left at 2am and went to bed, driving home 4 hours back.

So in total, the 6 Plus was about 18 hours in my pocket while sitting mostly.

As I lay it on the coffee table and sat down on the couch to relax from the drive (yes, sitting again ), I saw the reflection of the window in the iPhones slightly distorted. Now I lay it flat with the display side on the table, take a look."

The same day Twitter user Wario64[31] tweeted out a link to the thread, with Twitter user SeanPincombe[32] responding by introducing the Twitter hashtag #bendgate. Within a week the hashtag was tweeted[33] out over 37,000 times.

On September 23rd, The Daily Dot[34] published an article titled “Apple fans’ tight pants are bending the iPhone 6 Plus,” which highlighted the problem and the hashtag. The following day the hashtag and problem were covered by Mashable[35] and Newsday.[36]

Fandom

Throughout the 2000s, Apple engaged in a series of highly successful marketing campaigns for their new lines of iMac personal computers and iPod MP3 players. That, plus the widespread popularity of the products, provided Apple with a devoted consumer base who jump at the opportunity to buy the next in the line of products. Over the years, this following has become extremely widespread, and the fans have become increasingly virulent in their quest for the latest Apple products. This has resulted in very long lines at Apple stores during product launches, as well as general hype and hysteria surrounding the company’s announcements of new products. The following has been likened to a religion or a cult by outside observers. BBC journalist Alex Riley, reporting on the opening of a new Apple Store in Covent Garden, London wrote the following:

"The scenes I witnessed at the opening of the new Apple store […] were more like an evangelical prayer meeting than a chance to buy a phone or a laptop.

[…]

“And what did those customers – some who’d travelled from as far away as the US and China and slept on the pavement for the privilege – find when they finally got inside?

“Well, all the same stuff as in the Apple store half a mile away on Regent Street. No special offers, no free gifts (a few t-shirts were handed out), no exclusive products. Now that’s devotion.”

The Reality Distortion Field

Apple’s method of announcing and presenting their new products to the general public through keynote speeches has been instrumental in the development of its following. The presentations were characterized by the charisma of the late CEO Steve Jobs, along with Apple’s aggressive marketing, and were extremely successful about building hype for the next new product. This has been termed a “reality distortion field,”[5] referring to how, during the presentation, the Jobs’ charisma was so forceful that the audience was essentially mesmerized, and would follow his every word. Thus, Jobs became the idol of the ‘cult’[6]. This term has since been applied to other charismatic speakers, such as Bill Clinton.[5]

The Mac vs. PC Debate

A frequent debate amongst internet users, some of whom may align themselves with the Apple fandom, is which is the better platform: Mac or PC/Windows. Arguments often get heated, and Linux proponents are often excluded entirely. PC proponents point to the limited customizability of both Apple’s software and hardware, and the lack of major gaming platforms (although this is beginning to change), while Mac proponents point out frequent unreliability of PCs, as well as their proclivity for attracting computer viruses.

Brand-Related Memes

Apple / Mac Switch Spoofs

Apple / Mac Switch Spoofs are a series of spoof images and videos surrounding an advertising campaign by Apple (then Apple Computer) in 2002. The campaign showed ‘real people’ who had decided to switch from using a Windows-based computer to a Macintosh-based computer, listing their reasons. This was picked up upon by sites such as YTMND, and gained such popularity that some well-known actors such as Will Ferrell created their own spoof videos.

iPod Ad Spoofs / Parodies

iPod Ad Spoofs / Parodies refers to a series of parody images created about Apple’s distinctive marketing campaign for the iPod, showing black silhouettes with white iPods superimposed over colored backgrounds. The style of the ad is highly exploitable, and many examples have been posted across the internet.

Mac vs. PC Ad Campaign

Mac vs. PC is the name of another marketing campaign by Apple, begun in 2006. It compared a stereotypical, middle-aged, straight-edge businessman – the “average PC user” – with a young, hip, artist-type – the “average Mac user”. The ads detailed the supposed shortcomings of PCs, and why consumers should purchase Macs instead. The ad campaign further fuelled the heated Mac vs. PC debate, ever-present with contemporary youth. It has been parodied many times, usually with videos titled “X vs. Y” taking a similar format to the ads.

Steve Jobs / Bill Gates Comic

The Steve Jobs / Bill Gates Comic is an exploitable comic series that depicts a conversation between Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs and Microsoft’s chairman Bill Gates. The comics often depict the somewhat acrimonious relationship between the two and their companies, much in the same vein as the Mac vs. PC parodies (see above).

Product-Related Memes

Many of the internet memes related to the Apple products are centered around the iPhone and iPad.

iPad Spoofing

iPad Spoofing refers to the public reaction to the announcement of Apple’s first tablet, the iPad, in 2010. The reaction was particularly disdainful on 4chan’s /v/ board. Many focused on how the product appeared to be nothing more than a larger version of the already-released iPhone, except without the functionality of a telephone. Others focused on the name iPad itself (see above), in relating it to a feminine hygiene product. In fact, the comedy TV show MAD TV created a parody commercial for the ‘iPad’ feminine hygiene product three years before the tablet’s release[7].

iPhone Whale

The iPhone Whale is the name given to an ad-hoc emoticon found within the iPhone’s iChat app. A screenshot of the whale was spread around Tumblr and Reddit, and has spawned many derivatives. It has become so widespread that a Chinese company is producing iPhone Whale pillows.

iPhone 4 Death Grip

The iPhone 4 Death Grip refers to a design fault within the iPhone 4, by which the phone’s antenna was blocked from receiving a signal as users held the phone in their hands. It was seen as a catastrophic mistake by tech experts, but it did not dampen the product’s explosive popularity. It has been the subject of many creative photoshoppings.

Shit That Siri Says

Shit That Siri Says is an expression that humorously refers to unusual responses made by Apple’s voice-activated command program, Siri, which was introduced with the iPhone 4S. Sometimes the responses can be due to glitches within the program, but more often or not, they are due to the fact that Siri was programmed to have an attitude.

iPhone 5’s Extended Height

While the release of iPhone 5 in September 2012 has been regarded as a commercial success (with more than two million units pre-ordered within the first 24 hours), the phone garnered mixed reviews from the tech news blogosphere, many of whom described the fifth generation model of the smartphone device as “boring.” Meanwhile, others on 4chan, Tumblr and Twitter began commentating on the slightly longer dimension of the device, who dubbed iPhone 5 with the nickname “LongPhone” through photoshopped images and single topic blogs.

iOS 6 Maps

Before the release of iOS 6, Apple’s updated mobile operating system released alongisde the iPhone 5, the company announced that it would be ditching Google Maps as its default map provider in favor of an in-house designed app. The new app, called Apple Maps, has faced widespread criticism across the internet for its large number of inaccuracies and errors.[11] Screenshots of the new, error-filled maps are being spread around image-sharing sites.

iOS7 Waterproof Prank

As early as on September 21st, 2013, shortly after the release of Apple’s iOS7, a group of pranksters on 4chan launched a hoax campaign to sabotage the early adopters by creating a series of Apple-esque advertisements claiming that the latest software update will make iPhone devices waterproof.

The fake advertisements were complemented by a fabricated Facebook status update from Apple’s CEO Tim Cook confirming the false rumor that “the iOS7 can now survive 99% exposure to water accidents.”

In the following days, a variety of facetious messages praising iOS7’s waterproof feature emerged on Twitter, as well as several angry reactions from iPhone users who presumably fell victim to the prank.
