Selfie Olympics, also known as Trick Shot Selfie, is a photo fad that involves taking a mirror-shoot selfie in a bathroom while posing in a physically challenging manner or partaking in an unusual activity.

Origin

On November 21st, 2013, FreeOnSmash blogger Rock Burgundy[1] tweeted a photograph of a young man taking a mirror-shot selfie while holding his phone with both hands to the side of his head, coining the hashtags #trickshotselfies and #AND1selfieleague.




Spread

On the morning of December 25th, 2013, Twitter user YungTumbleweed shared a selfie of a young man in a climbed position around a door. The tweet quickly spread beyond the user’s followers, accumulating more than 2,300 retweets and 1,600 favorites in the first week.




Later that same day, LittleMissSunshine tweeted another selfie of a young man posing on top of the bathroom sink while supporting himself against the wall, using the hashtags #And1SelfieLeague and #TrickShotSelfies.




On January 3rd, 2014, the Twitter account SelfyOlympics was launched to curate a variety of mirror-shot selfies taken in all sorts of challenging poses. Within hours of its creation, the hashtag became a trending topic on Twitter.
