About

Sanic, an intentional misspelling of “sonic,” refers to a series of fan artworks and game modifications featuring a poorly illustrated version of the video game character Sonic the Hedgehog. Sanic is commonly associated with another poorly-drawn illustration of Sonic titled “Gotta Go Fast”.

Origin

On March 31st, 2010, YouTuber 0nyxheart uploaded a video titled “How 2 Draw Sanic Hegehog,” containing footage of a Sonic the Hedgehog illustration being drawn in MS Paint accompanied by a distorted version of the music from the “Green Hill Zone”Sonic the Hedgehog level. The original upload of the video has since been removed.

On July 19th, 2010, Newgrounds Forums[1] member fawfulBeans posted a Sonic the Hedgehog illustration with the caption “Sanic Runs Fast” (shown below).



On November 2nd, 2011, YouTuber Utentagen uploaded an animation music video featuring Sanic and “Gotta Go Fast” illustrations (shown below, left), claiming that it is a leaked E3 trailer for the then-upcoming title Sonic Generations. On March 15th, 2012, YouTuber MixMastaCopyCat uploaded a video titled “Let’s Play Sanic The Game,” which contained footage of a man playing a Sanic 3D video game while yelling maniacally (shown below, right). Within two years, the video garnered upwards of 570,000 views and 2,900 comments.



On May 27th, 2013, FunnyJunk[2] user weniscake submitted an edited version of the Running Dad comic in a post titled “Sanic da hoogheheg,” in which a father with blue hair jumps out a window and runs down a trail (shown below). In the first years, the post gained over 26,500 views and 500 up votes.



On July 30th, YouTuber vinesauce posted a video titled “The Legend of Sanic: Ocarina of Fast,” featuring footage of a Sanic game mod for the the Nintendo 64 game The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. In the following eight months, the video accumulated more than 570,000 views and 1,400 comments.



On September 10th, 0nyxheart returned to YouTube with a video titled “I’m Back.” On February 19th, 2014, 0nyxheart uploaded a video called “SANICHEGHOGENDINGMUSIC” with a description declaring Sanic to be “dead.” Three days later, his account was deleted for a second time.

Notable Examples

As of March 2014, there are more than 3,300 fan art illustrations hosted on DeviantART[3] under the tag “Sanic.”
