“I’m Getting Too Old For This Shit” is the catchphrase of the fictional character Roger Murtaugh (played by Danny Glover) from the Lethal Weapon series of buddy cop action films.
Origin
In the 1987 film Lethal Weapon, Homicide Sergeant Roger Murtaugh repeatedly says the memorable quote “I’m getting too old for this shit” when faced with dangerous and frustrating circumstances while on the job after recently celebrating his 50th birthday.
Spread
On July 9th, 2008, Xkcd[4] published a webcomic titled “Too Old For This Shit,” which joked about math abilities declining with age (shown below).
On January 25th, 2010, YouTuber dossard15 uploaded a montage of Murtaugh saying the line in several Lethal Weapon films, which gathered over 360,000 views and 230 comments in the first four years.
On July 7th, a Facebook[5] page titled “I’m too Old For This Shit” was launched. On January 1st, 2012, the quote was added to the “Character Aged with the Actor” entry on the tropes database website TV Tropes.[3] On March 6th, a supercut by editor Ben Craw featuring variations of the phrase “I’m getting too old for this” was highlighted on the film news site Moviefone.[2] On March 13th, the supercut was reblogged on the viral content site BuzzFeed.[1]
