Dogs Wearing Pantyhose (Chinese translation: 狗狗穿丝袜 or “Gou Gou Chuan Siwa”) is a Chinese photo fad in which dogs are photographed wearing black sheer tights.

Origin

The earliest known photo of a dog wearing black tights was posted on the Chinese social network Weibo[1] by user Ulatang (shown below) on April 2nd, 2013. By April 5th, Ulatang’s photo had received over 16,000 comments.



Spread

Inspired by Ulatang’s photo, other Weibo users soon began uploading pictures of their dogs wearing pantyhose. On April 3rd, 2013, the photo fad was first picked up by the Chinese news blog Sina.[10] On April 5th, the Hong Kong news tabloid Sharp Daily[2] highlighted notable examples of the photo fad. The same day, the trend was reported by several English-language news sites, including Kotaku,[4]DIS Magazine,[3] the Huffington Post,[5] UpRoxx,[13] The Daily Dot[9]and Laughing Squid.[6] On April 6th, MSN featured a slideshow of notable examples from Weibo.[7] On April 8th, ABCNews[1] published an article about the pictures, which compared it to other pet photo memes, including Dogshaming, Cat Breading and Beedogs.[12]
