Vibrating GIFs are animated pictures that shake vigorously which are often used as a reaction images on image boards and discussion forums.

Origin

The earliest known vibrating GIF instance was posted to the Worst Fucking Blog Ever[1] on March 31st, 2011, which featured a portrait of a bug-eyed dolphin shaking violently with the description “I don’t know why this is so funny” (shown below).



Spread

On May 17th, 2011, Tumblr user ForTheLoveofBarbie[6] posted a tutorial for creating vibrating GIFs using the open source GIMP photo-editing software. On May 22nd, Livejournal[5] user spiekster93 published a tutorial on creating vibrating GIFs using Adobe Photoshop CS5. On August 6th, 2012, an anonymous 4chan[2] user submitted a vibrating GIF featuring the face of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle character Michelangelo to the /a/ (anime & manga) board (shown below, left) in a thread about the anime series Space Battleship Yamato. On November 27th, IGN Forums[3] member Dark EternalFF submitted a vibrating GIF of the Gorilla Munch cereal mascot with the caption “maximum over-rustle” (shown below, right) to a thread about the video game Asheron’s Call. As of January 2013, there are over 75 vibrating GIF submissions on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic image-sharing site Derpibooru.[4]
